Spindleruv Mlyn Alpine Ski World Cup Races Preview

The Alpine Ski World Cup continues on 24 and 25 January in Spindleruv Mlyn with a Giant Slalom and a Slalom race. Spindleruv Mlyn, situated in the north-east of Bohemia along the Polish border, is one of the most popular skiing centres in the Czech Republic. The town lies in the Giant Mountain National Park at 715 - 1310 metres above sea level, where the Dolsky stream joins the river Labe. The ski resort, named Skiareal, has 5 cableways and 11 ski lifts in two different ski areas: Špindlerův Mlýn and Horní Mísečky, with a total of 26 kilometres of slopes (3 black slopes, 10 red and 7 blue). 95 % of the slopes can be covered by artificial snow in the case of bad weather conditions. The resort attracts around 700,000 visitors each winter season.

Spindleruv Mlyn has hosted four women’s Giant Slalom races in the 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2010-2011, and 2018-2019 winter seasons. The venue also hosted a Slalom race the day after the Giant Slalom in each of those four seasons, followed by two Slalom races only in the 2022-2023 winter season.
The first women’s Giant Slalom race in Spindleruv Mlyn in December 2005 was won by Janica Kostelic. Austrians Kathrin Zettel and Marlies Schild finished in second and third place. The day after, Anja Paerson won the Slalom event. Janica Kostelic and Marlies Schild completed the podium.
Italian Denise Karbon won the second Giant Slalom held in Spindleruv Mlyn in January 2008. Tanja Poutiainen and Elisabeth Goergl were second and third. Marlies Schild won the Slalom event ahead of Veronika Zuzulova and Maria Riesch.
Viktoria Rebensburg won the 2011 Giant Slalom. Denise Karbon and Lindsey Vonn rounded up the podium. Marlies Schild repeated at the top of the podium in the Slalom event. Kathrin Zettel and Tina Maze finished in second and third place, respectively.
Petra Vlhova won the last Giant Slalom held in Spindleruv Mlyn in March 2019. Viktoria Rebensburg and Mikaela Shiffrin completed the podium.
The day after, March 9, 2019, Mikaela Shiffrin claimed her first-ever win at Špindlerův Mlýn. She skied two impeccable runs to take a 0.85-second lead over her closest competition, Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. Petra Vlhova rounded out the podium in third place (+2.03).
Shiffrin made her debut in the World Cup on March 11, 2011, in Špindlerův Mlýn in the Czech Republic.
On January 28, 2023, Mikaela Shiffrin won the first Slalom held in the Czech Republic. Lena Duerr finished in second place, 0.60 seconds behind Shiffrin. Wendy Holdener was third, 1.31 seconds behind the American. It's her second podium in the Czech resort. She finished runner-up behind Mikaela Shiffrin in the Slalom World Cup event held in Špindleruv Mlýn, on 9 March 2019.
The day after Lena Duerr won the second Slalom held in Spindleruv Mlyn. It was her first World Cup Slalom victory. She beat Mikaela Shiffrin by a mere 0.06 seconds. Third place went to Croatian Zrinka Ljutic.
