In the fifth Super-G race of the season, the last one before the Alpine World Ski Championships in Saalbach, Lara Gut-Behrami claims her first win. It's her fifth Alpine Ski World Cup Super-G win in Garmisch.
Kajsa Vickhoff Lie secured second place, trailing by 0.35 seconds. Federica Brignone, who won the Downhill yesterday, came in third, 0.38 seconds behind the Swiss.
"It was a good run. It wasn't easy, because the conditions were difficult. I tried to attack from the start and let the skis run. I'm happy I managed to get down well from top to bottom," Gut-Behrami said.
"It has been a weird start to the season, I've been struggling a bit. I had to find the confidence back, the way to push on the skis again. A few times I missed something, and I made mistakes. I'm happy that today everything came together," Gut-Behrami added.
In her previous 12 Alpine Ski World Cup Super-G races, Gut-Behrami finished nine times on the podium including four victories. Since the 2012-2013 winter season, the 33-year-old Swiss skier has secured at least one race win in every season except for 2018-2019. She has claimed 46 World Cup race victories, matching Renate Götschl for fifth place on the all-time women's list, and 96 podium finishes. The only four women with more World Cup wins than her are some of the biggest legends in Alpine skiing: Mikaela Shiffrin (99), Lindsey Vonn (82), Annemarie Moser-Pröll (62) and Vreni Schneider (55).
The skier from Ticino is second for most World Cup Super-G wins (23) and podium finishes (42) among women, only trailing Lindsey Vonn (28 wins and 46 podiums).
Gut-Behrami is leading the World Cup Super-G standings ahead of Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia. She extended her lead to 75 points with three races remaining and closed the gap to 70 points behind Federica Brignone in the pursuit of the Overall title.
She won the Super-G Crystal Globe last season and joined the Club of Super-G Stars with her fifth Crystal Globe (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023, and 2024). German Katja Seizinger (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998) and American Lindsey Vonn (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015) are the other two women in this exclusive group.
On the Men side, Austrian Hermann Maier (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004) and Norwegian Aksel Svindal (2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2014) are also in the exclusive club of the winners of five Super-G Crystal Globes.
She is the first woman to win the Super-G title in successive seasons since Tina Weirather won in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
Kajsa Vickhoff Lie achieved her 8th podium finish in the Alpine Ski World Cup today, at the same location where she earned her first podium, placing second in the Super-G in 2021.
"It's Norwegian weather. It's rainy, it's salty and I was skiing on this since I was a little kid. I really like the conditions, you can be active and move the outside ski. But it was fast today so you had to go with your instincts," Lie said.
Federica Brignone reached her 77th podium finish today in the Alpine Ski World Cup, with 23 of those in the Super-G.
"I think I didn't make it so good the last part. But I don't think I was in front of Lara today, she made an upper part better than mine. She's an amazing skier. She is winning the World Cup in Super-G in the last years and I'm always second. When you beat her, it's that you did an amazing job," Brignone said.
