Highlighting the Memorable Moments of Alpine Skiing at the Olympic Winter Games
The highlight of the coming season will be the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina. The XXV Olympic Winter Games are scheduled to take place from February 6-22, 2026, in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games will be the fourth Olympic Games hosted in Italy, following the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.
Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo were selected as the host cities on June 24, 2019, at the 134th Session of the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The Olympic flame will begin its journey from Olympia, Greece, on November 26, 2025, and will arrive at San Siro Stadium on February 6, 2026, for the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. The torch relay for the 2026 Olympics will cover approximately 12,000 kilometers, traveling through all 110 provinces of Italy and passing through the hands of more than 10,000 torchbearers along the way.

January 25, 2024, marked 100 years since the first Olympic Winter Games took place in Chamonix, France. Organized under the patronage of the IOC, it included many of the ceremonial aspects of the Olympic Games; the Olympic Winter Games formally began, although they were originally known as the "Semaine Internationale des sports d’hiver". In 1926, during the 25th Session of the International Olympic Committee in Lisbon, the Chamonix Games were recognized as the first Olympic Winter Games.
However, the first organized international competition involving winter sports was introduced just five years after the birth of the modern Olympics in 1896. In 1901, the Nordic Games, the first winter sports event was held in Stockholm.
St. Moritz, Switzerland, hosted the second Olympic Winter Games in 1928, while Lake Placid, New York, hosted the third in the United States.
Alpine skiing made its Olympic debut at the IV Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936, featuring a combined format that included Downhill and Slalom events for both Men and Women.
